How does a septic system work?

In general terms, a septic system is a small-scale sewage treatment system common in areas with no connection to city sewerage pipes. An inlet pipe from the home connects to a septic tank at one end and to a septic drain field at the other.

Wastewater enters the tank, solids settle, and scum floats. Most solids are anaerobically digested, thereby reducing the volume of solids. The liquid flows through a dividing wall into a second chamber where further settlement occurs.

If waste in a septic tank is not decomposed through anaerobic digestion, it must be removed, or the tank will become full. The frequency of emptying the tank depends on the tank’s volume, the input, the volume of indigestible solids, and the temperature.

  • As shown above, excessive dumping of cooking oils and grease can fill the septic tank and can cause the inlet drains to block. Oils and grease often do not degrade and can cause odor problems and difficulties.
  • Roots from trees and shrubbery growing above the tank or the drain field may clog and or rupture them.
  • Flushing non-biodegradable hygiene products (i.e. sanitary napkins, diapers, etc.) will rapidly fill or clog a septic tank — these materials should not be flushed in your system.
  • The use of garbage disposals or other waste macerators of waste food will create a rapid overload of the system. Individual households should understand the possible risks to their septic system before using food disposals.
  • Certain cleaning agents may damage the working of a septic tank—pesticides, herbicides, high concentrations of bleach or caustic soda (lye), and any other inorganic materials such as paints and solvents should be avoided in your system.
  • Playgrounds and storage buildings over your drainage field may cause damage to a tank and the drainage field.
  • Covering the drainage field with an impervious surface or hard-standing will seriously affect its efficiency.
